Taxes to End the War

Cosmic Messenger suggests, "..Americans should demand a corporate war tax be imposed to pay for Bush's Middle East misadventures.

If big business had to pay for the war, it would end in a heartbeat.."

Just after seeing his comment on my blog, I got an e-mail update from Too Much that linked to an article by Nicholas von Hoffman suggesting the same thing. I think it just might work! Now all we have to do is convince Congress to enact it.

It won't work for two reasons: 1. Bush doesn't have to listen to corporations any more- he's not running for reelection, and he's in the war because he truly believes, not for personal profits. 2. The corporations wouldn't be paying the tax; we would, when they raise their prices to cover the extra tax burden. The only thing the "war tax" would do is cause a bit of inflation, and the only people who would be hurt is the working poor.

Joel,
You are probably right that they would pass on the cost to the consumer. Perhaps a bit of inflation might help the working poor who owe debt because the money paid back would be worth less than the money borrowed, but then they would just raise the interest rates to make up the difference. "sigh"
